NETWORK SECURITY
There are two different approaches to security in computing.
One focuses mainly on external threats and generally treats the computer system itself as a trusted system.
The other, regards computer system itself as largely an entrusted system, and redesigns it to make it more secure in a number of ways.
INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING
What is a network?
A network has been defined as “any set of interlinking lines resembling a net, a network of , an interconnected system, a network of alliances”.
Similarly a computer network is a distributed system consisting of loosely coupled computer and devices.
The Internet
The internet is the world’s largest network of networks. When you want to access the sources offered by the internet, you don’t really connect to the internet; you connect to the network that is eventually connected to the Internet backbone. A Simple Local Area Network
LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)
A computer network with two or more computers or clusters of network and their resources connected by a communication protocols, and confined in a small in a small geographical area is called a Local Area Network (LAN).
WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)
A wide Area Network (WAN), on the other hand, is a network made up of one or more clusters of network elements and their resources but instead of being confined to a small area, the element of the clusters or the clusters themselver are scattered over a wide geographical area like a region in a country or the entire country or even the entire globe such as internet.
METROPOLITIAN AREA NETWORK (MAN)
Between the LAN and WAN is also a middle network called metropolitan network (MAN) because it covers a slightly wider area than the LAN but not so wide as to considered a WAN such as networks that cover a city or apart of the city.
CONCLUSION
Security is a very difficult topic. Everyone has a different idea of what “security” is and what levels of risk are acceptable. The key for building a secure network is to define what security means to your organization. Projects and systems can then be broken down into their components, and it becomes much simpler to decide whether what is proposed will conflict with your security policies and practices.
Security’s is everybody’s business, and only with everybody’s cooperation, an intelligent policy, and consistent practices, will it be achievable.
