The basis of all learning is experience and the best way for effective learning is the use of audio-visual aids which include television videos motion pictures and computers etc. Audio visual aids are the devices that initiates and reinforce learning. They make learning concrete, realistic and dynamic. Audio visual aids quicker our learning faculties by appealing our senses and making our understanding clear.
In recent years the education system has changed all levels. It is changing and will continue to change as and when it is required. There is an agreement amongst the teaching fraternity all over the world that the academic education should be replaced by dynamic education which is related to life. The modern way of teaching aims at the awakening of curiosity, the stimulation of creativity, the development of proper interests and attitude’s values and the building of essential skills such as independent study and capacity to think and judge for oneself. In the past, teachers were the sovereign as far as teaching-learning process was concerned. The role of the student was passive most of the time. Modern trends have though changed the face of education, but have not given up the traditional methods instead they are modified and adjusted to the changed concepts and situations. Now a days, various teaching aids such as audio CDs, radio etc; visual aids which include wall charts illustrated pictures, pictorial materials that may be locally made or commercially produced and audio visual aids like television, mobile and all sorts of projectors with sound attributes, video clippings on You Tube etc are used extensively. The present paper examines the effectiveness of screening of performance in the teaching of drama prescribed in the curriculum of S.Y.B.A. students of English Literature.
Drama as a literary form is different from other form of literature like poetry and novel for drama is not just the description or discussion of events. Drama is the re-creation of real life and while doing so it makes use of all the constituent elements of real activity. These include language, movement, position, gesture and facial expression. So in teaching drama the primary concern is about the fundamental process of converting a printed text into a live performance. Teaching drama needs the use of any kind of visual aids because of its complex and difficult language in addition to the fact that there are many actions which can not be explained through speech only because of their complexity which might cause misunderstanding to the students. Besides the length of the play can also be an obstacle to the students understanding of the play. So the process of teaching becomes obvious when audio-visual aids are used. Hence, it is desirable to start from audio-visual aids rather than from the printed text.
Using aids is not useful in teaching the long plays only, but even the one-act plays, need aids to make the ideas understandable to the learners. Moreover, because of the intensity of the action, the one-act plays sometimes appear more difficult for the students to understand than the full length plays.
