ABSTRACT
The long-anticipated Light Sport Aircraft/Sport Pilot rule was finally approved and went into effect September 1. This
revolutionary change in FAA regulations will allow two-place airplanes with 1,320 lb or less gross weight, maximum stall
speed of 45 kt., and maximum level flight speed of 120 kt, to be produced under much less burdensome and costly rules. Safe
yet affordable aircraft should now be available to a wider market. Pilots can be certified under the Sport Pilot category by
learning to fly in these planes. with fewer training hours required, and can operate them with a valid driver’s license in lieu
of an FAA medical certificate.
