Introduction
W6 mtu diesel engine is used in ships.
Its having 12 vertical cylinders and 5.38 leters
swept volume and have turbo cooling principle
to cool the engine.
GEAR TRAIN
The oil pumps, coolant pumps, engine governor, and crankshaft are driven by the crankshaft through gears. These gears i.e. drive gear and idler gears, are accommodated in a separate component at the KS-end and in the cover plate at the KGS-end.
The oil pumps are driven by the crankshaft through an idler gear.
The engine Governor is driven by the crankshaft through the large idler gear.
The camshafts are driven by the crankshafts through the large idler gear, the back gears and the adjustable idler gear.
The raw water pump is driven by the crankshaft through an idler gas installed into three end cover at the KGS-end.
CRANK ASSEMBLY
The crankshaft is designed as a disk-welded crankshaft the webs the forming the inner races for the main bearing. It is supported in the crankcase in 7 roller bearings.
It has to be assembled by various parts which are :-
Roller age
Bearing roller
Bearing outer race
Main bearing complete
Blade rod, cpl.
Fork rod
Small end bush
Conrod bolt
Fork rod bearing
CYLINDRER HEAD
The individuals cylinders heads are bolted to the engine housing and seal the cylinder spaces at the top.
A pre-combustion chamber is centrally located in the cylinder head.
The burner is screwed into the pre-combustion chamber from above.
A shoulder bush inserted into a well in the cylinder head centers and supports the unit injector.
VALVE CONTROL GEAR
The cam and rocker housing covers the entire bank of cylinders or 5 cylinder each of one engine side in the case of 20 cylinder 538 series engines. It is made of light metal and contains the valve gear components.
The valve gear components are:-
Exhaust camshaft
Inlet camshaft
Inlet and exhaust valve rockers
Unit injector rockers
Regulating parts for the unit injector
FUEL INJECTION EQUIPMENT
In the center of each cylinder head is a well into which the unit injector is fitted. It is secured into place by a clamp, spherical washer and bolt.
The lower parts contains the plunger guide and plunger.
The nozzle cap and nozzle elements are screwed onto the steel body from below.
ENGINE GOVERNOR
Start position of governor – To prevent starting at full injection, the governor is provided with a start fuel injection limitation. This device is upon starting, subjected to priming oil press. and limits the travel of the power piston pilot valve.
Idling position of the governor – After the engine has started to fire the engine-mounted oil pumps take over the oil supply. The priming oil pump is switched off, and the governor regulates from start fuel position.
Speed or power increase – Movement of main control leaver ( when setting a higher speed ) increase the control air pressure entering the governor. By means diaphragm.
Manual engine stop - One the second shut-down shaft of the governor is a sheave to which a pull cable may be connected.
