ABSTRACT
Aerospace software systems are increasing in size, functionality. and complexity. Highlights from this year are focused
on managing software complexity, software outsourcing, and software in spaceborne systems. Complex aerospace
architectures are beginning to fuse the technological aspects of hardware and software in a way that prohibits exhaustive
testing. The FAA’s Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) concept is defined as an integrated set of flexible, reusable, and
interoperable hardware and software resources to host applications performing aircraft-related functions. The IMA concept
mirrors the emergent properties of complexity by focusing significant attention on the integrated system and not on individual
components. The FAA is nearing completion of an advisory circular that recognizes DO-254 as a means of compliance for
complex electronic hardware and software implemented in IMA.
