INTRODUCTION
A Fast Breeder Reactor in which liquid metal is used as coolant, is called as Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor.
Here the cooling and heat transfer is done by a liquid metal. The metals which can accomplish this are sodium and lithium.
Mainly sodium is used as a coolant because of its advantages over other.
BREEDER REACTOR
A Breeder Reactor is a nuclear reactor capable of generating more fissile material than it consumes .
These are designed to breed new fissile material(plutonium239) from fertile material(uranium238).
Or ,A reactor with a conversion ratio or conversion factor above unity is called a Breeder Reactor.
Breeder Reactor is commonly called a Fast Breeder Reactor.
It has a great commercial importance.
Conversion ratio or breeding ratio is the ratio of number of secondary fuel atoms formed to the number of primary fuel atoms consumed .
LIQUID METAL FAST BREEDER
REACTOR
The Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) is a nuclear reactor that has been modified to increase the efficiency at which fertile uranium-238 is converted to fissile plutonium-239, which can be used as fuel in the production of nuclear power.
The reactor uses "fast" rather than "slow" neutrons to strike a uranium-238 nucleus, resulting in the formation of plutonium-239.
In second modification, it uses a liquid metal, usually sodium, rather than neutron-absorbing water as a more efficient coolant. Since the reactor produces new fuel as it operates, it is called a Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor.
POOL TYPE LMFBR
In pool type system, the primary pump, reactor core and intermediate heat exchanger are placed in a large pool of liquid sodium contained in the reactor vessel.
The liquid metal(sodium) is discharged from the intermediate heat exchanger to the pool.
It is then pumped upward through the core and re-enters the heat exchanger.
This type is widely used in Europe.
