Abstracts: “India’s transport system has not progressed alongside the extremely rapid growth of population and vehicular use. This has resulted in outdated transport infrastructure, uncontrolled suburban sprawl, sharply rising motor vehicle ownership and use, deteriorating bus services, a wide range of motorized and non-motorized transport modes sharing roadways, and inadequate as well as uncoordinated land use and transport planning. Its evolution is closely linked to how the country evolves on many dimensions; social, political, economic, legal, and environmental. This project summarizes the present context of urban scenario, common transportation problems in Indian metropolitan cities, characteristics and historical development of ‘STRADDLING BUS SYSTEM’, need for transportation alternatives in Indian metropolitan cities, followed by challenges, options and way forward to development of seamless transportation systems to reduce energy consumption, emissions, and road congestion.
