Colchicine, an important tropolone alkaloid used in the treatment of gout & plant breeding work, is extracted from Gloriosa superba seeds1. It is a rich source of colchicine. Colchicine occurs in various part of tree such as tubers, seeds, and roots. The dried seeds yield up to 0.3% of colchicine2.

Colchicine occurs in various part of tree such as tubers, seeds, and roots. The dried seeds yield up to 0.3% of colchicine2. Alcoholic extract of seeds on alkali treatment gives colchicines. Colchicine, the major tropolone bioactive alkaloid was extracted & isolated from the seeds of Gloriosa superba and quantified. Its identity was confirmed & characterized by UV, IR and NMR. Further the effect of various parameters such as time, solvent, and temperature has been studied for the extraction of colchicine. Colchicine has been isolated and characterized by spectral methods.
