INTRODUCTION TO VERKA
The Punjab State Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (MILKFED) was established the in 1973 by Punjab Diary Development cooperation under the Punjab State Co-operative Act, 1967 to safeguard commercial interest of Milk producers farmers to save them from exploitation of middlemen, with their participation in its management and provide quality milk and milk products to consumers at competitive rates. It came into existence with a twin objective; first to carry activities for promoting production, procurement and processing of milk for the economic development of milk producers by providing remunerative milk market to them at their door step. Second, provide quality milk and milk products to consumers at reasonable rate. Although the federation was registered much earlier, but it came to real self in the year 1983 when all the milk plants Punjab Dairy Development corporation Limited were handed over to cooperative sector and the entire State was covered under operation Food programme to give farmers to a better deal and our valued customers better products. Today, when we look back, verka has fulfilled the promise to great extent.
HISTORY OF PLANT
This plant has established in 1980 by Punjab Dairy Development Corporation. The Punjab Dairy Development Corporation and Milkfed are the two Government Dairy Organizations which are running parallel to each other at this time. In 1982 there both organizations submerge into one organization which is named as Milkfed.
Milkfed came into existence with twin objective of providing remunerative milk market to the milk producers in the state by value addition and marketing of produce one hand and to produce one hand and to provide technical input to the milk producers for the enhancement of milk production on other hand.
Set up of organization is the three tier system, Milk produce’s, Cooperative Societies at the village level, 11 Milk Union at District Level, and Federation as an Apex Body at state level.
Quality of Milk and Milk Products
To improve the quality of raw milk, Clean Milk Production program started in 700 villages and resultantly the quality of products increased.
Milk Plant, Ludhiana was the First in India in Dairy Sector to get ISO Certification.
Under ISO Certification and HACCP (IS 15000) Milk Union started export of Ghee, SMP to Gulf Countries Philippines, Manila, South Africa, Singapore, Bangla Desh etc. The export is more than 5.5 crore during the last year.
To further improve the quality of Raw Milk, Milk Union started 366 Automatic Milk collection Stations at village level.
To meet the Challenges of WTO Milk Union started TIFAC program with the help of Ministry of information.
51 Bulk Milk Coolers have been installed at village level to chill the milk on this spot and to check bacterial count.
64 model dairy demonstration farms have been established and 202 milking machines have been provided in distt. of Ludhiana which has encouraged the farmers to adopted dairy on large scale.
Milk Union, Ludhiana is first in India which has installed Bectoscan worth 70 lacs and Somatic cell count machine have been installed at milk plant, Ludhiana,
Further 23 BMC has been approved under central govt. Scheme on 75% grant to be installed in societies. Present Status/ Achievements of the Plant
No. of societies increased from 94 to 802 and its membership from 5400 to 78500.
Milk Procurement has increased from 10200 LPD to 2,50,000 LPD.
ROLE OF MILKFED PUNJAB
Milkfed operates with an avowed objective of bringing prosperity among milk products of the State. Not only by just providing them adequately remunerative cost, but also through an efficient network for marketing their products.
A subsidiary objective of providing milk and nutrition to consumers at affordable price has also been accorded due recognition. Theses twin objectives can be achieve in the larger context of the state by working out sustained viability of the Dairy Coops in free market. Althrough MILKFED procures only 15% of marketable surplus milk in the villages, where it operates, but is crucial for the farmer and consumers both. Price set by MILKFED becomes a reference point for entire milk industry and is helpful for the farmers in big way. The practices to improve the quality and food safely become role model for industry in the interest of consumer.
On behalf of the Board of Director, we now present to you the Annual Report and audited Accounts of the Federation for the year 2008-09. These account have been approved by Board of Director in the meeting held on 29-12-2009.
SIGNIGICANT IMPROVEMENT IN FINANCIAL POSITION
Milkfed as am Apex Body earned net profit of Rs. 558.78 Lacs during the year 2008-09 in comparison to profit of Rs. 264.96 Lacs during previous year. If we put Milkfed & its affiliated Milk Union together there is net profit of Rs 1462.02 lacs during 2008-09 against net profit of Rs 596.69 lacs in previous year. This is ever higher profit since inception and surpassed earlier highest profit of Rs. 1049.99 lacs earned during the year 2004-05.
