Tata Power
Tata Power is India’s largest power utility in the private sector today, with a presence in generation, transmission, distribution and trading. The company was established in 1911 as the Tata Hydro-Electric Power Supply Company to supply power to Mumbai.
Tata Power has an installed power generation capacity of over 3,000 MW in the areas of thermal, solar, hydro, geothermal and wind energy generation. In addition, the company is implementing a 4,000 MW mega power project in Mundra, Gujarat.
The company is actively working towards addressing climate change issues. Tata Power's sustainability initiatives include investing in clean energy production, building a strong renewable portfolio, focusing on bio-diversity conservation, streamlining water use and planting trees around its plants. The Tata Power Energy Club (TPEC) involves school children in its efforts to propagate efficient energy use. TPEC started in 2007 by sensitising 12 schools in Mumbai and became a nation-wide movement in 2009, covering more than 250 schools across nine cities in India. The club has over 13,000 Energy Champions and has sensitised over one million citizens with a saving of 1,080,685 units of electricity.
Areas of business
The company operates across the entire power value chain, from generation, transmission and distribution to trading and consultancy.
• Power generation: Tata Power’s thermal power stations are at Trombay in Mumbai, Jojobera in Jamshedpur and Belgaum in Karnataka. The hydro stations are at Bhira, Bhivpuri and Khopoli in Maharashtra.
• Renewable energy:
Wind power: Tata Power is the leading private wind generation company in India with an installed capacity of 221.90 MW, and an additional capacity of 150 MW to be set up in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Currently, Tata Power’s wind power capacity is spread across three states — Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka.
Solar power: Tata Power has a 110kw solar plant at Walwhan, Maharashtra. It is implementing a 3 MW solar photovoltaic plant at Mulshi. It has also signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited for a 25 MW solar photovoltaic power project at Mithapur, Gujarat.
Geothermal energy: The Tata Power-led consortium of Origin Energy, Australia, and PT Supraco, Indonesia, has formed a Special Purpose Vehicle PT Sorik Marapi Geothermal Power to develop the Sorik Marapi project in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
• Transmission and distribution: The company supplies power to the cities of Mumbai and Delhi. It is a partner in the 1,200km Tala transmission project, India's first interstate transmission project and one of the largest power grids in the world.
• Fuel: The company has captive coal blocks at Tubed and Mandakini in Jharkhand and Orissa along with joint venture partners. The company has also acquired 30 per cent equity stake in two major Indonesian thermal coal producers, PT Kaltim Prima Coal and PT Arutmin Indonesia, as well as related trading companies owned by PT Bumi Resources Tbk.
• Shipping and logistics: Trust Energy Resources Pte incorporated in Singapore is a 100 per cent wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power which secures coal supply, coal trading and shipping and investments in coal.
• Trading: The Tata Power Trading Company has the licence to carry out transactions in power trading in India.
• Power project related services: The company provides expertise in setting up independent and captive power plants, transmission and distribution projects, and operations and maintenance management in India and overseas.
Joint ventures, subsidiaries and associates
• North Delhi Power: A joint venture with the Government of Delhi to supply power to the north and northwest areas of Delhi (www.ndplonline).
• Powerlinks Transmission: A joint venture with the Power Grid Corporation of India, for the 1,200km Tala transmission project.
• Tata Power Trading Company: A wholly-owned subsidiary and the first company to get a power trading licence from India’s Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (www.tatapowertrading).
• Strategic Electronics Division: An internal division that designs and develops electronic products and systems for India’s defence sector
• Nelco: A subsidiary company with core competencies in the areas of systems integration and project management for defence electronics, energy network management, power electronics, VSAT networks and automation.
• Coastal Gujarat Power: The subsidiary set up for developing the 4,000 MW Mundra (ultra mega power) project.
• Industrial Energy: A joint venture with Tata Steel to develop captive power plants.
• Maithon Power: A partnership with Damodar Valley Corporation for a 1,050 MW mega power project at Jharkhand.
