Abstracts: Nowadays, publishing an Images and searching an images from internet has become popular way for information retrieval. Too much information is available in the form of images over the internet. Each image has its description attached as meta-information like title, author and description. Text extraction from images with complex backgrounds remains a challenging problem. Text characters embedded in images represents a rich source of information for content based indexing and retrieval applications. However, these characters are difficult to be detected and recognized due to their various sizes, grayscale values and complex backgrounds. Existing methods cannot handle well those texts with different contrast or embedded in a complex image background. In this project, a set of sequential algorithms for text extraction and enhancement of image will be proposed. The image enhancement includes gray level, contrast manipulation, edge detection, and filtering. First, it applies edge detection and uses a threshold to filter out for low contrast text and simplify complex background of high contrast text from binary image. Character recognition has a continuous importance for several years and recently, new challenges appeared with camera-based pictures. Our project deals with text extraction from images contained texts.
