WHAT IS BUCK BOOST TRANSFORMER?
Buck boost transformer is a type of transformer used to make small adjustment to the applied voltage to alternating current equipment.
Buck means to decrease and Boost means to increase. We get several types of transformer …. All in one convenient package.
WHY ARE THEY USED?
Electrical and electronic equipment is designed to operate on standard supply voltage.
When the supply voltage is constantly too high or too low, (usually more than 55%), the equipment fails to operate at maximum efficiency.
A buck and boost transformer is a simple and ECONOMICAL means of correcting this off-standard voltage.
Construction and working
The principle of working of buck-boost transformer is same as that of a normal transformer.
The main difference between buck-boost transformer and normal transformer is that it is having 4 windings.
There are no restrictions on the type of load that can be operated from a buck-boost transformer.
SELECTION OF BUCK-BOOST TRASFORMER
LINE VOLTAGE- It is the voltage that we want to Buck(Decrease) or Boost(Increase). This can be found by measuring the supply line voltage with a voltmeter.
advantages-
1.Low cost
2.Compact size
3.Light weight
4.Highly efficient
5. More efficient than the equivalent distribution transformer.
6. Indoor or outdoor service.
limitations-
1.Cannot be used to develop a three phase 4 winding wye circuit from a three phase three wire delta connections.
Can not be used in open delta connections.
Should not be used to correct for voltage drop on long circuit run where the load demand is fluctuating.
Can not be used to create a 240/120V , single phase service from a 208/120V three phase supply.
