FAST Virtual pooling
FAST is abbreviated as “FULLY AUTOMATED STORAGE TIERING”
The FAST VP operates on the storage data by relocating the most active data.
FAST VP segregates disk drives into the three tiers
1) Extreme Performance Tier = Flash Tier (Hot Data)
2) Performance Tier = SAS Tier (Warm Data)
3) Capacity Tier = NL-SAS Tier( Cold Data)
Storage pools
The FAST VP logically makes the connection between more than one type of drive.
LUNs can then be created at the pool level. These pool LUNs are no longer bound to a single storage tier
Statistics collection
Activity level is determined by counting the number of I/Os for each slice.
FAST VP maintains a cumulative I/O count and “weights” each I/O by how recently it arrived. And this weight decays over time.
Analysis Phase
This analysis produces rank ordering of each slice within the pool. And ranking progress from hotter slices to cold slices.
Relocation Phase
FAST VP relocates slices based upon there warmness(i.e. on ranking), as hotter slice in higher level and cold slices to the lower level.
