Abstract
Ultrasonic metal welding is a solid state welding process, & here ultrasonic vibrating motion is used to join 2 materials.
The 2work pieces are held in between the anvil & sonotrode.
The workpiece on the anvil is hold stationary while the other part is moved due to the vibrating effect of sonotrode.
In this movement, the oxides dispreses layer in between them and atoms of the workpiece are diffused from one part to another.
.Introduction:
In 1938, bergman & some colleagues were experiments with ultrasonic ways & their eggects.
They found that many materials could be combined by ultrasonic welding that could not be joined by any other method.
The ultrasonic welding combines high frequency vibrations & pressure to form a solid state bond.
Working:
The circuit of us welding is shown in fig.
It consists of an ultrasonic generator, which generates frequency of 20 to 40kHz from a supply of 220v.
The convertor transforms the frequency electric energy produced by the generators into mechanical energy.
The piecec to be welded are clamped between the welding tip called sonotrode & anvil.
.Limitations:
Due to fatique loading the life of equipment is short.
Materials being welded tends to weld to the tip & the anvil.
The thickness of the workpiece is restricted about 3mm metals.
.Applications
In aircraft structural applications.
Joining of electronics equipments.
Welding of alluminium wire & sheets.
