ABSTRACT
The project is designed to use a TV remote as a cordless mouse for the computer. A conventional PC/laptop uses a mouse to operate and control all its applications. As a PC mouse is wired to the system, one has to sit near the PC to operate it. This becomes very tedious when the PC is used for presentation purposes (when using a projector). In this proposed system TV remote can be used as a cordless mouse, and the user need not operate the PC sitting near it.
A typical TV remote sends coded infrared data that is read byanIR sensorinterfaced to an8051 family microcontroller. This data so received by the microcontrollersends it to the COM port of a PC through a level shifter IC. This IR code is traditionally RC5 code as followed by some manufacturers.Software named PC remote is used on the PC that recognizes data received from the microcontroller through the COM port and performs the required operation. Designated numbers on the TV remote are used to perform up - down, right - left cursor movement. Features like left click and right click of the mouse can also be performed with of the TV remote.
The IR sensor is an electronic device that detects the infrared signal in order to sense some aspects of its surrounding. Inside the remote we have one IR led which emits pulses (RC codes)which is received by the IR sensor of TV. Every TV or DVD player has one IR receiver in front of it, to operate it remotely. IR light is not visible to the human eye.
Block Diagram Explanation:
This system controls the applications on PCs and laptops using a TV remote. TV remote acts like the computer mouse. This system is developed with IR sensors, PC, power supply unit and level shifter IC. The power supply unit and IR sensor are inputs and level shifter and PC are outputs of this system which are interfaced to the microcontroller. The AC voltage is lowered using a step down transformer and then converted into DC voltage with rectifier and DC is given to the circuit.
The IR receiver receives the IR signal from the IR transmitter or TV remote. The level shifter usually converts digital signals from one logic level to another logic level. The microcontroller sends the data to the COM port of a PC through a level shifter. The PC recognizes the data received from the microcontroller through a COM port and carries out the required operation.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM EXPLANATION:
The 230V AC power supply is converted into low voltage AC with the help of step-down transformer. This low voltage AC is rectified and regulated to provide the DC supply to drive the circuit. The IR receiver has an inbuilt control circuit for amplifying the received signal. The IR sensors work at a frequency of 38KHzs. The TV remote delivers the infrared code at 38KHz that is received by the IR receiver. The IR receiver amplifies the received coded pulses. This is fed to input pin of the microcontroller. The microcontroller receives the amplified pulses and according to the program, converts the received pulses data into the required originaldata, i.e. the particular number pressed at the remote. This data is then fed to the input pin of the level shifter IC which converts the TTL input signal from the microcontroller to the RS232 standard. The serial input is then given to the RS232 port of the computer. Thus PC gets the data serially from the microcontroller through RS-232 serial cable and performs the required operation and the TV remote works like a mouse from a distance.
OUTPUT VIDEO EXPLANATION:
The TV remote works likes a cordless mouse for the computer. The PC and laptops applications are controlled by the TV remote. The control circuit is connected to the PC through a level-shifter IC and RS 232 cable. Selection of COM port should done in software “PC-control” and enable it. After enabling the COM port of your PC to get the commands serially from the microcontroller, we can perform the required operation. The TV remote is used to perform functions like up, down, left and right cursor movement. For example you will press ‘2’ cursor goes in up direction and on pressing ‘3’, it goes in downward direction.
CONCLUSION:
This project is achieved to control the PCs or laptops applications through a TV remote based on IR sensors. The IR sensors work effectively to transfer and receive the signals. The fact that it requires less power to operate and its high security are the advantages of this system.
The TV remote sends the infrared data and the IR receiver receives the code that is sent by the microcontroller. The microcontroller sends the corresponding key to PC through a level shifter IC. The TV remote is used to control the left, right, up and down of cursor movements. This system is used to control the laptops, telephone, DVD players and personal data assistance.
FUTURE SCOPE:
The curser of the computer is controlled by the TV remote based on IR sensors. A conventional PC or laptop uses a mouse to operate and control the applications based on IR sensors. The IR sensor transmitter and receiver must be able to see each other to communicate and it works in short distance. This project in future can be extended by using Bluetooth/RF technology to overcome the line of sight communication drawbacks. Instead of a TV remote a smart phone with touch screen application can be used. It can operate passing through the walls also.
