Introduction
The VBBS is a project funded by ESA under ARTES 5 program. It
started in January 2004 and is composed in 2 Phases:
First phase (application and requirements definition) closed in June 2004
Second phase (development and demonstration) started in July 2004
The goal of the project is to:
Develop a proof of concept of a law enforcement “black box” to use in vehicles.
Demonstrate the proof of concept
The system should:
Store position information and in-vehicle data
Have reliable position solution (position reliability information should be provided
by the positioning module)
Use wireless communications for data exchange with the box
Allow third party services
Be tamper proof (the black box only)
Related work and projects - Digital Tachograph
ERTICO project 2000-2002
EU mandatory in heavy vehicles 09-2004 onwards
Europe wide scope, Eastern Europe also
Records data on vehicle and driver
Law enforcement concerns
No wireless communications
No goods bill handling
No satellite positioning
Good source of info
What data to store
How often
Black Box (BB) features
Tamper detection:
Box opening
Antennas disconnection
Power supply interruption
Operation visual indication
Database (with aprox. 1 year of data logging capacity)
Encrypted data Communications (802.11a and ssh)
Restricted data access
Third parties services running trough a middleware that limits the
resources control
Allow User Terminal to use the wireless communications
Navigation data output
Position integrity log
Vehicle sensors data log and visualization trough user terminal
Vehicle sensors data crossed with position data
