Abstract:
Cloud computing plays an important role in order to share resources and one of the important technology in the cloud computing is virtualization. The main aim of virtualization is ability to run multiple operating systems on single machine by sharing all resources that uses the specific hardware. In this paper our main goal is to Also we will discuss the benefits and impact of virtualization on social as well as on organization.
Keywords: Cloud, cloud computing, Green cloud computing, hypervisor, virtualization.
I. INTRODUCTION
Green computing is the study and practice of environmentally sustainable computing which includes e-waste management and also reduces resource use. It is the act of improving IT resources to minimize its environmental footprint. This includes the control of materials, energy, water and other rare resources .
Many IT manufacturers and vendors are continuously investing in designing energy efficient computing devices, reducing the use of dangerous materials and encouraging the recyclability of digital devices and paper. Green computing is also known as green information technology (green IT).
Similarly green cloud computing focuses on environment, with cloud computing, provides services that runs on vendor’s system which helps in minimizing the cost of building other infrastructure and services to run, hence also makes a green and clean environment.
As the energy demand in computing is increasing, the methods for the efficient use of energy are needed. In this paper we are going to explore how virtualization will help in building a green cloud computing.
II. GREEN COMPUTING:
The goals of green computing are similar to green chemistry: reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote the recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste . Green computing is responsible and eco-friendly use of computers and their resources. It the study of designing, manufacturing, using and disposing of computing devices in such a way that reduces environmental impact.
The major problem faced by an organization while implementing energy efficient and ecofriendly technologies is the difficulty in measuring saved energy, effective cost. Therefore, a global consortium of organization comes out with one of the best way to reduce environmental impact that is virtualization.
III. VIRTUALIZATION:
It’s the process of creating a virtual, rather than physical, version of something, such as server, operating system, storage devices or network resources so that they can be used on multiple machines at the same time.
The main aim of virtualization is to manage the workload by transforming traditional computing to make it more scalable, efficient and economical. Virtualization can be applied to a wide range such as operating system virtualization, hardware-level virtualization and server virtualization.
Virtualization technology is hardware reducing cost saving and energy saving technology that is rapidly transforming the fundamental way of computing .
How to achieve virtualization:
Partitioning
Run multiple operating systems on one physical machine
Divide system resources between virtual machines
Isolation
Provide fault and security isolation at the hardware level
Preserve performance with advanced resource controls
Encapsulation
Save the entire state of a virtual machine to files
Move and copy virtual machines as easily as moving and copying files
Hardware Independence
Provision or migrate any virtual machine to any physical server
V. BENEFITS OF VIRTUALIZATION:
1. Energy Consumption: With virtualization the power consumption due to machines has reduced as the number of hardware machines has been reduced which makes this technology more efficient and eco friendly
2. Redundancy: With virtualization the power consumption due to machines has reduced as the number of hardware machines has been reduced which makes this technology more efficient and eco-friendly.
3. It helped to make cloud computing more efficient and ecofriendly.
4. A big step towards new technology making life easier and better.
5. Isolation: Server virtualization provides application isolation and removes application compatibility issues by consolidating many of these virtual machines across far fewer physical servers.
6. Sharing of resources helps cost reduction.
7. Dynamical resource
8. QA/lab environments: Virtualization allows you to easily build out a self-contained lab or test environment, operating on its own isolated network
9. Improves disaster recovery.
10. Hardware Independence: Virtual machines run independently of underlying hardware
11. Portability: Virtual machines can be migrated between different hosts.
