Abstract
With users increasingly adopting Internet-enabled hand-held devices, WAP
becomes the most convenient way to access Internet content and services. In this
paper, we have developed a WAP-based Home Service Network Management and
Control System (WAP-HSNMC) that can furnish users with omnibus home services
on Intranet/Internet through WAP. The WAP-HSNMC involves many technologies,
including: Mobile home service management, Integration of wired system and
wireless system, and supporting adaptive WAP server. Moreover, XML is used to
cope with exchanging heterogeneous data between trading partners.

Introduction
The rapid evolution of information and technology leads the keen competition in
business. When efficiency is treated as the top priority, the traditional wired telephone
system cannot satisfy the modern life requirement any more. Because the mobile
communication is so convenient and can increase our working efficiency, hand-held
devices with WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) are flourishing all over the world.
Datacomm Research estimates that 350 million of these devices will be shipped by
2003 [1].
Such evolution also impacts on home environment maintenance, and affects the
home service strategies of the service vendors as well. In order to maintain a modern
safe, efficient, and comfort "Smart Home" or "Smart House [2]," we design
WAP-HSNMC to enhance our Web-based home service system - IHSNII [3].
The IHSNII is an omnibus household service network system. It supports a
well-organized Internet service infrastructure, and can integrate the traditional home
service modules of business partners via INTEGRATOR (as shown in Figure 1).
On account of the phenomenal growth in Internet and World Wide Web technology,
the Intranet becomes well developed, and the application of WAP technology becomes
popular as well [4]. The WAP-HSNMC is designed to access the information via
mobile phone or other hand-held devices through Internet/Intranet, so it can give the
service providers a more flexible way to manage their service, and allows end users to
configure or monitor their home services more conveniently.
With WAP-HSNMC, the home service users of IHSNII system can modify their
service parameters of home security and household appliances control, and monitor
their newest home service statuses via Internet-enabled hand-held devices. Moreover,
the employees of IHSNII service provider can do their job for monitoring service
Intranet Internet
from anyplace and at any time, and get the newest statuses of the service targets, so as
to provide the best service with the least delay.
The paper is organized as follows. Section 2 describes the architecture and design
issues of WAP server. Section 3 describes XML information base of WAP-HSNMC.
Section 4 explains the data interchange mechanism for business partners. Section 5
makes a conclusion.
WAP Server of WAP-HSNMC
The Web page used in WAP is encoded in WML (Wireless Markup Language) [5].
Because not all of WAP browsers interpret WML to same style, the same WML page
may be looked somewhat different in different WAP browser. Moreover, all mobile
terminals are small in size, have a rather limited memory and processor capability.
The wireless bandwidth in mobile communication is also limited as compared to
wired networks. These factors should be treated carefully when designing the WAP
server. For providing a well service, our WAP server is able to provide adaptive Web
page according to the type of WAP browser [6].
