Introduction
Used for materials removel process.
Process is done by series of spark erosion.
Spark is produced between the work piece and wire electrode seperated by dielectric fluid.
Principle Of WEDM
It is the process of repetitve sparking cycle.
Series of electrical pulses are generated between the workpiece and wire electode .
During spark discharge, there is flow of current across the wire electrode-work piece gap. Energy contained in tiny spark discharge removes a fraction of work .
Working of WEDM
In WEDM material is removed from the work piece by a series of discrete sparks occurring between work piece and wire electrode separated by a stream of dielectric fluid, which is continuously fed to the machining zone with the help of nozzle.
The dielectric fluid is used to remove debris and heat from the machining zone
Adventage Of WEDM Processes
Tool manufacturing and storage is not required.
Inspection time is reduced, due to single piece construction of dies with high positioning accuracy.
Cycle time is shorter for die manufacturer, as whole work is done on one machine.
Heat treatment distortions are totally avoided.
Economical, even for small batch production, including prototypes, as most of the programming can be done easily.
Unmanned machining operations are possible.
Disadventage of WEDM
Higher capital cost of machine setup..
Slow cutting rates.
Not applicable to very large work piece.
Not applicable for non conductive materials.
