There are several pollution control devices commonly used in industry or transportation devices. They destroy pollutants or remove them from an exhaust stream before it is emitted into the atmosphere. We will shortly examine particle, gas and emission control solutions for mobile sources.
Particle Control
The particles may be solid fumes or particles of dust, or liquid droplets. The particulate matter sizes vary greatly, for example PM10 means particulate matter which is less than 10 micrometers. An important source of particles is combustion; automobiles, burning of fossil fuels and power plants. Particle control equipment includes several alternatives; settlers, cyclones, electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters and wet scrubbers.
Gas control
The control techniques used depend on the nature and properties of the gas or vapor. Gaseous air pollutants can be controlled by three methods. These control methods include absorption, adsorption, and combustion or incineration.
