The Valvetronic system is a variable valve lift system from BMW which, combined with variable valve timing, allows infinite adjustment of the time and duration of the intake valve. The system aims to improve fuel economy and emissions, and denies the need for a throttle body in regular use.
On conventional gasoline engines when the throttle pedal is depressed, the throttle butterfly opens to allow fresh air to enter. The fuel injection system measures the mass of incoming air and injects the required amount of fuel.
One of the most recent and interesting innovations in the field is BMW's Valvetronic engine technology. The compact 316ti is the world's first production car with an engine controlled by the VALVETRONIC air supply. Consequently, the VALVETRONIC engine no longer requires a throttle butterfly, which has literally restricted the free ventilation of the internal combustion engine since its invention.
Now VALVETRONIC replaces this conventional function with the infinitely variable intake valve lift, offering a qualitative leap in technology quite comparable to the change from carburetor to fuel injection. And at the same time it clearly demonstrates the exceptional competence and innovative power of the BMW engineers, VALVETRONIC who returns to a BMW patent and is manufactured exclusively on BMW's own machines and facilities.
Valvetronic Technology uses a combination of hardware and software to eliminate the need for a conventional throttle mechanism. The whole Valvetronic system is preassembled and inserted as a module in its position in the cylinder head. Accordingly, the Valvetronic engine no longer requires a throttle, which has literally restricted the free ventilation of the internal combustion engine since its invention.
Now Valvetronic replaces this conventional function by raising the infinitely variable intake valve, offering a quantum leap in technology quite comparable to the change from carburetor to fuel injection. And at the same time it clearly demonstrates the exceptional competence and innovative power of BMW engineers, Valvetronic who returns to a BMW patent and is manufactured exclusively on BMW's own machines and facilities.
