Generally, an account is opened on each page of this book, but if the transactions related to a particular account are numerous, it can be extended to more than one page. All transactions related to that account are recorded chronologically. From the journal, each transaction is posted to at least two corresponding accounts: the debit side of one account and the credit side of another account. Remember that if there are two accounts involved in a journal entry, it will be posted to two accounts in the general ledger and if the journal entry consists of three accounts (compound entry) it will be posted to three different accounts in the general ledger. The process of transferring journal information to general ledger accounts is known as posting. The purpose of all transactions is the general ledger. The ledger is known as the destination of journal entries, but it should be remembered that transactions can not be recorded directly in the ledger, but must be routed through the journal.
