Phase adaptive elements based on blocking phase (APPLE) are Raytheon's DARPA development initiative. The initiative is for the development of a directed energy weapon that uses a beam combination technique for high power achievement. It will integrate the applications of laser-enabled weapons into unmanned aerial vehicles. The APPLE program allows all electronic combinations of high-power laser recorder bundles within an agile and compliant aperture: a practical approach for synthesizing laser engravers of high-power weapons from low-power modules for applications such as laser radars, designation of Laser targets, laser communications and laser weapons grade. The idea is to provide electro-optical systems with the same flexibility and mission performance that microwave phase arrays provide for RF applications, such as radar and electronic warfare systems.
