A shaper is a type of machine tool that uses a linear relative movement between the workpiece and a single point cutting tool to machine a linear trajectory. Its cut is analogous to that of a lathe, except that it is (archetypal) linear rather than helical.
A woodcarver is a similar woodworking tool, usually with a rotating driven cutting head and a manually fed workpiece, usually known simply as a North American carver and a spindle moulder in the United Kingdom.
A metal working cutter is somewhat analogous to a metal planer, with the blade mounting a ram that moves relative to a stationary workpiece, rather than the workpiece moving under the blade. The piston is typically driven by a mechanical crank within the column, although hydraulically driven shapers are increasingly used. The addition of motion shafts to a shaper can produce helical paths, as is also done in helical glide.
