About the Subject:
Soil mechanics is a branch of engineering mechanics that describes the behaviour of soils and Origin of soils, soil classification, three-phase system, fundamental definitions, relationship and interrelationships, permeability & seepage, effective stress principle, consolidation, compaction, shear strength.. It differs from mechanics and solid mechanics within the sense that soils incorporates a heterogeneous mixture of fluids (usually air and water) and particles (usually clay, silt, sand, and gravel) however soil may additionally contain organic solids, liquids, and gasses and different matter. Along side rock mechanics, soil mechanics provides the theoretical basis for analysis in geo technical engineering, a sub discipline of technology, and engineering earth science, a sub discipline of earth science. Soil mechanics is employed to research the deformations of and flow of fluids at intervals natural and synthetic structures that area unit supported on or made from soil, or structures that area unit buried in soils. Example applications area unit building and bridge foundations, holding walls, dams, and buried pipeline systems. Principles of soil mechanics are employed in connected disciplines like engineering earth science, geology engineering, coastal engineering, agricultural engineering, and geophysics and soil physics.
