Cognitive radio The liberating spectrum to enable new opportunities
Abstract:
Demand for wireless communications services is exploding, placing tremendous strain on the capacity of wireless communications networks. Radio spectrum is a resource of fundamental importance in wireless communications systems. One area of focus for addressing this challenge is Radio frequency. Any wireless transmission occupies a portion of radio spectrum. While almost all Radio frequencies.
Cognitive Radio has been identified as a promising solution to the so called Spectrum scarcity problem. Spectrum awareness is an essential part of Cognitive Radio systems that enables CR systems to intelligibly utilize the spectrum. Such technology is motivated by measurements campaigns comparing the spectrum regulation defined by government agencies and the actual usage of the licence.
The innovative communications services and applications imposed by ever increasing customer demands render necessary the development of efficient radio resource exploitation mechanisms and intelligent network planning methods. The whole process of planning and managing a reconfigurable net frequencies are allocated, most of it is either unused or unutilized. The current spectrum allocation process for wireless is highly inefficient, leading to significant underutilization of spectrum in the face of explosive growth in demand. Spectrum survey is one of the essential tools of spectrum management which provides the policy makers with the necessary information about the frequency usage pattern of different bands. The spectrum sensing problem has gained new aspects with cognitive radio and opportunistic spectrum access concepts. It is one of the most challenging issues in cognitive radio systems. work must be reconsidered, in order to live up to the expectations created by the migration towards a new era of communications. This White Paper deals with such issues, emphasizing the role of new engineering technologies in reconfigurable networks. For this purpose, it presents the respective Radio resource Management, i.e. Spectrum Management and Joint Radio Resource Management and Network Planning technical approaches, aiming at their application in next generation wireless access infrastructures.
