The Factories Act 1948 (Act No. 63 of 1948) as amended by the Amendments Act of 1987 (Act 20 of 1987), serves to help formulate national policies in India on safety and health at work. factories and docks in India. It deals with various problems related to safety, health, efficiency and well-being of people in the workplace.
The Law is administered by the Ministry of Labor and Employment of India through its Directorate General of Advisory Services and Labor Institutes (DGFASLI) and by the state governments through its factory inspections. DGFASLI warns the Central and State Governments on the administration of the Factories Act and coordinates the factory inspection services in the States.
The Law is applicable to any factory in which ten or more workers work, or were working on any day of the previous twelve months, and in any part of which a manufacturing process is being carried out with the help of power, or ordinarily or in which they work twenty or more or work on any day of the preceding twelve months, and in any part of which a manufacturing process is carried out without the aid of power, or is ordinarily carried out in this way; but this does not include a mine, or one belonging to the armed forces of the union mobile unit, a shed railroad or a hotel, restaurant or place to eat.
