Green Building Defined
Green Building.docx (Size: 20.17 KB / Downloads: 33) ABSTRACT Roof gardens, solar panels, solar geysers, environmentally-friendly building material, rainwater harvesting, water and energy efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, and the overall environmental ethic, all this was once thought to be the airy-fairy utopia talk of hippies back in the 70s, back when the environmental movement was just beginning. Today, three decades later, the environmental crisis that was predicted but went unheeded has pushed the commercial sector into a ‘New Age of Construction’ where environmental impacts, planning, design, construction and operation are part of changing our destructive effects on the planet. Green buildings have become standardized in many parts of the globe, from the east to the west and north to south. The green ethic is influencing the way buildings are designed from the proposed location site to the intricate architectural model, to the inner operational workings of the water system to the energizing and the heating of structures. Intrinsic to this is the human health component, constructing healthy buildings, to replace amongst other lethal building materials, the once commonly used highly toxic asbestos for insulation and lead-based paints. LEED LEED, a green building rating system originating from the United States, and adapted for Europe and the Gulf, arose from pressure within the planning, design and construction sectors. The US Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non profit organization that developed and administers the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System. Buildings meeting the standards and conditions of LEED are then certified as ‘green buildings’. While actual green products used in the buildings are not certified by LEED, the overall combined positive impacts of products in meeting the green building standards are recognized, such as, Eurofins VOC Emission Chamber Testing. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are released as air emissions in industrialized and urbanized processes. Indoor VOC emissions are related to products used in the building such as adhesives, sealants, flooring, coatings and paints. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are also VOCs. In addition, Eurofins work also entails the detection of chemical trace ingredients in products, namely, CMR compounds (carcinogenic, mutagenic, reproduction toxic) sensitising ingredients, monomers, additives, process chemicals, PAH, chlorinated paraffins, PCB, dioxins and a wide range of toxins. Blue Angel The Blue Angel Label, was the first and is the oldest eco-label for green products and services, created in Germany in 1978, but expanding. Blue Angel has succeeded in awarding eco-labels to asbestos-free brake linings in 1980. Asbestos has been banned in most parts of the world due to its carcinogenic and respiratory disease impacts occupationally (mines, construction installations e.g. roofing and in motor vehicles in brake linings). Blue Label went on to award labels for CFC-free aerosols, low-lead, low-chromate anti-corrosion material, low-noise construction machinery and equipment in the 80s. Their success rate and advanced accomplishments in the commercial and industrial sector goes on. South Africa In 1996, I pitched a city greening plan for Johannesburg, ‘Johannesburg the Ecopolis’, based on Curitiba’s well-advanced ecological city plan, I was gawked at by a room full of government planning, engineering, housing and land use officials, who regarded me as a naive, young, green-freak. We were only two years into our freedom from the chains of apartheid, our democracy was infantile and the inherited human rights and social imbalance overbearing. However, the environmental component was a key principle of the liberation movements during the apartheid era and therefore features so boldly in our Constitution. My Ecopolis proposal was born at the wrong time, but nonetheless, I continued forcing the green building issue into all the projects I worked on but the reality on the ground is that digesting this component in construction and design is still taking form in South Africa. One of the biggest factors being affordability of the hardware such as photovoltaic solar panels and geysers, which are beyond the budgets of human rights low-cost housing delivery. South Africa has progressed on this front with the Green Building Council established in 2007. My argument is that relying on natural sources for energy and water, will in fact aid the poor in accessing unaffordable government services that are often cut-off when recipients are in arrears and of course the poor will be in arrears, as they are without jobs, food and homes, paying for costly services is a luxury they can’t afford. With energy efficiency designs such as north-orientation (for southern hemisphere) windows maximizing natural heat, rainwater harvesting for toilet use and food gardens, solar geysers, will reduce the burden on the poor, provide a better quality of life and protect the environment. Construction Carbon Footprint According to Build Carbon Neutral (2007) the Construction Carbon Calculator estimates embodied carbon. Embodied carbon is the carbon released when a product is manufactured, shipped to a project site and installed. This calculator looks at an entire project, and takes into account the site disturbance, landscape and ecosystem installation or restoration, building size and base materials of construction. It does this simply, requiring only basic information that is available to a project team very early in the design process (Build Carbon Neutral, 2007). Build Carbon Neutral (BCN) has developed a ‘Construction Carbon Footprint Calculator’ with the aim of ensuring the construction planning, design and implementation take into consideration the very critical issues of Carbon Footprints, Climate Change, Global Warming and Sustainable Survival. So what makes a building green? Firstly, choose a site for construction that has low-order environmental impacts (water, soil, air) and taking into account the life-cycle impacts from sourcing raw materials to transport to the site and the potential waste produced and the promotion of salvaged materials for reuse. Secondly, design a building layout to reduce its development footprint as far as possible, basically taking up less land space but making maximum use of allowable height restrictions. Thirdly, design the structure for natural energy and water efficiency, zero to low emissions and zero toxic product use. Fourthly, healthy living mechanisms such as proper ventilation, low VOCs, insulating water lines and geysers, food gardens, roof gardens, overall greening, porous vegetated pedestrian and driveway surfaces, need to be implemented.
