The Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) was a new proposed bus concept in which a guided bus spreads over the road, giving it alternate names such as straddles, buses, land buses or tunnels by international means.
A trial was scheduled to begin in the Mentougou district of Beijing in late 2010. However, the project was not authorized by the district authorities because the technology was too immature and additional trials were subject to the development of a concept to test the system really works. The city of Manaus, Brazil, has also evaluated the option of installing a bus astride its streets of the city. At the time of the 2016 inauguration of the scale model, it was reported that a prototype would be deployed by mid-2016 in Qinhuangdao. Four other Chinese cities, Nanyang, Shenyang, Tianjin and Zhoukou, had also signed contracts for pilot projects with the construction of test tracks from 2016.
However, a claimed proof of a prototype design was heavily criticized in August 2016, seemed to be abandoned in December 2016, and was thrown out in June 2017 for concerns about its feasibility. In July 2017, 32 people involved in the project were arrested by the Chinese authorities on suspicion of investment fraud. The prototype bus was removed from the test track in early July.
The cities of Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province and Wuhu in Anhui Province requested funding. A total of 185 kilometers (115 miles) of track was set for construction in the Mentougou district of Beijing by the end of 2010. The test was canceled due to doubts about the project. The city of Manaus, Brazil, signed a letter of intent with Chinese developers to create a straddle bus system.
