LASER BEAM MECHINING is a technology that uses a laser to drilling, cutting slotting, etc. utilizing a high intensity laser beam, and is typically used for industrial manufacturing applications. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high power laser, by computer, at the material to be cut. The material then either melts, burns, vaporizes away, or is blown away by a jet of gas Leaving an edge with a high quality surface finish. Industrial laser cutters are used to cut flat-sheet material as well as structural and piping materials, significant advantage of laser welding is that filler rods need not be used and two dissimilar metals can be welded

laser beam machining
LBM-MAIN.pptx (Size: 1.59 MB / Downloads: 158) introduction LASER (known as Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) is a highly coherent beam of electromagnetic radiation having wave length ranging from 0.1 to 70 micro meter. The rays of laser beam are perfectly parallel and monochromatic in nature and hence it can be easily focused to a small spot of about 0.002 mm diameter. A material removal rate as high as 5 mm³/min can be achieved during the process. What is laser micro-machining ? Laser micro-machining is the process of manufacturing parts of dimensions from 0.1 m to 1000 m using the laser beam as a cutting tool. Why “laser micro-machining”? The global trend of industry is moving toward miniaturization Micro-scale parts are used in diverse fields such as medical bio-medical, microelectronics, opti-electronics, space and others. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The basic principle utilized in laser beam machining process is that under proper conditions, light energy of a particular frequency is used to stimulate the electrons in an atom to emit additional light with exactly same characteristics of original light source(i.e. flash tube). For developing the high power density a pulsed ruby rod is used in the machining process. mechanism The mechanism involved in machining the surface of the workpiece through LBM process involve the following steps ---- laser beam generation. interaction of laser beam with the surface of the workpiece. conduction of heat and rise of temperature. melting and vaporization of workpiece. Melting and vaporization This high temperature melts the workpiece where the laser beam is meeting to the workpiece and vapourise the material of the workpiece and material removal takes place. TYPES OF CUTTING USING LASER BEAM:- Vaporization cutting:- In vaporization cutting the focused beam heats the surface of the material to boiling point and generates a keyhole Melt and blow:- Melt and blow or fusion cutting uses high-pressure gas to blow molten material from the cutting area, greatly decreasing the power requirement. Thermal stress cracking:- Brittle materials are particularly sensitive to thermal fracture, a feature exploited in thermal stress cracking. A beam is focused on the surface causing localized heating and thermal expansion. This results in a crack that can then be guided by moving the beam. CONCLUSION Research to date has shown that laser assisted machining is feasible in many applications however further research needs to be conducted before it can be implemented in industry.
