Abstracts: Ammonia is one of the major chemical manufactured from petroleum feedstock. The manufacturing process involving synthesis gas (N2+ H2) production from reforming of hydrocarbon and high pressure high temperature reaction of N2 & H2 to produce ammonia. This process consumes significant amount of energy by means of utility (steam, chilling water, cooling water, compressors, and fluid moving devices). The methodology to minimize energy consumption is a step by step approach. First step involves identifying energy sinks and energy sources present in overall process. In second step material and energy balance reveals opportunities to removes some of energy sinks and discovers hidden energy sources. Alternative for technology and feedstock may be explored and thru after process can be integrated for a new low energy consumption configuration.
