Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (abbreviated as RINL) also known as Vizag Steel. It is a public steel producer, based in Visakhapatnam. The steel plant is located 26 km south of Visakhapatnam city, Andhra Pradesh state of India. The company also has captive calcareous blast furnace mine in Jaggayyapeta (Krishna district), a captive Dolomite mine in Madharam (Khammam), a manganese rubber mine in Cheepurupalli (Vizianagaram). It also has mining lease for the sand of the river of Champavathi river.
To make possible the impossible is in the determination of man and Sri Tenneti Viswanadham was one of those personalities. The struggle of thousands of such personalities has paved a way to establish such a large steel plant. Activities began with the appointment of the site selection committee in June 1970 and subsequently the committee report was approved for the site. In January 1971, PM of India laid the foundation stone. The consultants were appointed in February 1971 and feasibility reports were submitted in 1972. The first block of land was taken in April 1974. M / s MN Dastur & Co was appointed as the consultant to prepare the detailed report of the project in April 1975 and in October 1977 have submitted the report for 3.4 MTPA of liquid steel. With the government. of the former assistance offer from the USSR, a revised project concept was developed. DPR for a plant capacity of 3.4 MTPA was prepared by M. M. M.D.Dastur & Co in Nov.1980. In February 1981 a contract was signed with the Soviet Union for the preparation of working plans for coke ovens, blast furnace and sintering plant. The blast furnace foundation was laid with the first mass concreting on the project in January 1982. The construction of the city boat also began.
RINL has been wholly owned by the Government of India previously, but due to the large loss of government sold its share for what is now public. In November 2010, the government of India granted the company the status of Navratna. In September 2011, the government announced plans to divest 10% of its stake in RINL through an initial public offering.
