Pentile technology was marketed by Clairvoyante. In March 2008, Samsung bought PenTile's company-related IP and technology, and formed a new company called Nuovoyance to continue the development of this screen technology. Here is an image of Nuovoyance showing Pentile vs RGB array.
The PenTile Matrix is a sub-pixel configuration that differs from more traditional RGB pixels in several ways. Sub-pixels on a PenTile screen can act as part of numerous logical pixels, and often contain pure white sub pixels. The effect of this is that PenTile screens can be made with fewer real sub pixels for a given resolution and can be perceived as brighter as well. Despite this, screens using the PenTile setup are often ridiculed by the press and consumers as diffuse compared to screens of the same basic resolution that use a more traditional RGB sub-pixel array.
