What is postmodernism?
Post can be defined as after and modernism was a movement in the arts in the first half of the 20th century that rejected traditional values and beliefs, and more emphasized on the individual experience. Therefore, postmodernism is a late of the 20th century approach in art, architecture, and literature that typically in the sense of mixed styles, ideas, and references to modern society.
There are slightly different between modernisms and postmodernism or we can say that postmodernism is another way to view the modernisms. For example, postmodernism will more to challenges, goes against, earlier modernist speeches, and also breaks the new ground. Postmodernism is all movements and theories that are new, come after, are built on and challenge the previous movements or theories. For them, the previous approaches are too rigid and limiting in understanding the culture and media. Therefore, they always think outside the box. They prefer that they can be dominated by themselves rather than controlled by others. As the result, they have their self-rules and freedom.
In short, what we can say is postmodernism like to develop and challenge structuralism approaches, taking into account the way contexts and audiences can produce more fluid meanings and readings of media texts.
How has postmodernism affected or changed our world?
First and foremost, postmodernism has make our daily life became more and more fashionable in most of the industrialized nations, mass media and mass production. This can give a rise on global economy and shift the manufacturing sector to service sector. Next, the way of viewing the sociological of the postmodernism is having the rapid transportation, wider communication and ability to abandon the standardized mass production which can gains more capital and allows value to be stored in a greater variety of forms.
Second, there was an research saying that postmodernism beliefs advocates the freedom to live life without ties to any tradition which including the God and religion. From this research, an issue was discussing, that was women and postmodernism challenges, evaluating from the Islamic Perspective. There was an issue in Malaysia, as we know that in Malaysia, there was 60% of Malaysian is Muslim. Nowadays, we can see there are a lot of women became more and more open to party or gathering rather than stay in the house. This is not only happening on Chinese and India, but also Malays as most of them didn’t faithful for their own religions. For examples, they involve of adultery in premarital sex, pregnant before marriage, became drunkards or drug addicts, smoked, gambled and others. Therefore, this proves that postmodernism changes the view of world in an individual.
Third, postmodernism always concern in artifacts which included the dominance of television, accessibility of information, popular culture, and mass telecommunications. In industrialism, the core competency of postmodernism is focusing on civil rights and equal opportunity such as women’s liberation and multiculturalism. From the political point of view, the postmodernism concern in various forms of effort to against depression or negotiation such as sex or ethnicity.
