INTRODUCTION
A battery is a device that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy.
The battery is the main part of the electrical system in an automobile vehicle. Without the battery, the automobile engine cannot be started with the starting motor.
Uses Of Battery
Starting Motor of automobile engine
Ignition System
Lights of the automobile vehicle
Radio
Heater
And several other accessories.
Constructions
Container
It is constructed in single piece and made of acid resistance of hard rubber, plastic or bituminous composition.
It must withstand extreme heat & cold as well as mechanical shocks.
It is a 12V battery container, hence six compartments are provided.
Separators
Separator is the thin sheet of non-conducting material to avoid direct contact between positive & negative plates, as well as to avoid the short circuiting.
The separator made from treated wood, porous rubber, fiber glass, resin bounded cellulose, etc.
Plates & Grids
The plates consists of perforated grids into which lead peroxide has been pressed.
Two types of plates in each cell Positive plate group and negative plate group.
Grids filled with paste of lead peroxide in the positive terminal plate group.
And grids filled with metallic lead in the negative terminal plate group.
The plate group of positive and negative terminal plates arranged alternately in the cell.
Each plate there is a frame work or grid made of an alloy of lead & antimony.
Working Of Battery
When battery is in working it means that chemical energy is converted into Electrical energy. It also means that the charge contain in the battery is low, that is the battery is discharging. And Electrical energy is converted into Chemical energy during charging.
Voltage
In each cell of the lead-acid fully charged battery about 2.1 volts and is usually considered to supply 2 volts. Thus a 12 volts battery contain 6 cells connected in series.
The battery voltage is depends upon the no. of cells.
