SMART MATERIALS
SMART MATERIALS.ppt (Size: 1.58 MB / Downloads: 177)
Material that can change one or more of its properties in response to an external stimulus.
For example, the shape of the material will change in response to different temperature or application of electrical charge or presenting of magnetic field.
HISTORY
Most of smart materials have been discovered around 50 years ago, but they were not applied to aerospace industry yet.
BACKGROUND
Materials have a strong relationship with aerospace industry, as it always determines the weight, strength, efficiency, cost and difficulty of maintenance of an aircraft.
TYPES OF SMART MATERIALS
PIEZEOELECTRIC MATERIALS
SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY
MAGNETOSTERICTIVE MATERIALS
PH-SENSITIVE POLYMERS
HALOCHROMIC MATERIALS
CHROMOGENIC SYSTEM
PHOTO MECHANICAL MATERIALS
SELF-HEALING MARETIALS
HALOCHROMIC MATERIALS
These materials are commonly used materials that changes their colour as a result of changing acidity.
Example:- corrosion in the metal
FUTURE OF SMART MATERIALS
an aircraft constructed from a sensual structure has an advantage of self-checking its performance to a greater level than that of current data recording, and provide ground crews with improved health and usage monitoring.
