Introduction to NFC
Short-range wireless communication
High frequency
Exchange of data between devices
10 centimetre distance
106 Kbit/s to 848 Kbit/s.
How NFC Works
RFID technology
Magnetic field induction
Communication between devices in close proximity around 10 cm.
For two devices to communicate using NFC,
NFC reader/writer
NFC tag.
Tag is essentially an integrated circuit containing data, connected to an antenna, that can read and written by the reader.
How is NFC different from other wireless?
NFC
enables contactless transactions, access digital content, and connect electronic devices with a single touch within 10 centimeters.
Bluetooth
replaced cables between cell phones, laptops, and other computing and communication devices within a 10-meter range.
Wi-Fi
provides an extension or replacement of wired networks for dozens of computing devices within a +100-meter range.
Key Benefits of NFC
Intuitive: NFC interactions require no more than a simple touch
Versatile: NFC is ideally suited to the broadest range of industries, environments, and uses
Open and standards-based: The underlying layers of NFC technology follow universally implemented ISO, ECMA, and ETSI standards
Technology-enabling: NFC facilitates fast and simple setup of wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.)
Inherently secure: NFC transmissions are short range (from a touch to a few centimetres)
Interoperable: NFC works with existing contactless card technologies
Security-ready: NFC has built-in capabilities to support secure applications
NFC in Public Transport
NFC compatible phone can connect with an NFC-enabled kiosk to download a ticket, or the ticket can be sent directly to an NFC-enabled phone over the air (OTA).
The phone can then tap a reader to redeem that ticket and gain access
Mobile Payment System using NFC
People can use NFC compatible mobile phones as virtual wallet for the payments in store by having mobile apps such as
Google Wallet for Android (Samsung Nexus, Samsung Galaxy SIII, etc)
Passbook for iOS (iPhone, iPad)
Future of NFC
Nokia is active in the area of NFC since 2004,
together with Philips and Sony founded the NFC
forum. Mission of the forum is to advance the
use of NFC technology by:
Developing standards-based specifications that ensure interoperability among devices and services
Encouraging the development of products using NFC Forum specifications
Educating the market globally about NFC technology
