The Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) in Varanasi, India, is a production unit owned by Indian Railways, which manufactures diesel-electric locomotives and their spare parts. It is the largest manufacturer of diesel-electric locomotives in India. Locally it is abbreviated as D L W. It is located on the DLW to BHU road of the metropolitan city of Varanasi. Founded in 1961, DLW launched its first locomotive three years later, on January 3, 1964. It manufactures locomotives that are variants based on the original ALCO designs that date back to the 60s and the GM EMD designs of the 90s. DLW has an annual production capacity of 250 locomotives and plans to increase it to 275 depending on the current demand.
