The Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act of 2013 (also Land Acquisition Act, 2013) is an Indian Parliament Act that regulates land acquisition and establishes the procedure and rules for granting compensation, rehabilitation and resettlement to affected people in India. The law has provisions to provide fair compensation to those whose land has been taken, brings transparency to the process of land acquisition to establish factories or buildings, infrastructure projects and ensures the rehabilitation of those affected. The law establishes regulations for the acquisition of land as part of India's massive industrialization driven by the public-private partnership. The Act replaced the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, a nearly 120-year-old law enacted during the British government.
The 2011 Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill was presented at Lok Sabha on September 7, 2011. [The bill was passed on August 29, 2013 and by Rajya Sabha on September 4, 2013. The bill received the assent of the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee on September 27, 2013. The law came into effect as of January 1, 2014.
A draft amendment to approve the Ordinance was then submitted to Parliament. Lok Sabha passed the bill, but the same is still for the passage through the Rajya Sabha. On 30 May 2015, the President of India enacted the amendment ordinance for the third time.
