Electronic waste may be defined as discarded computers, office electronic equipment, entertainment device electronics, mobile phones, television sets and refrigerators. PROBLEMS:- CRTs contain contaminants such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, mercury and brominated flame retardants. E- Waste growing at an unsustainable rate. Inappropriate handling of E-waste. heavy metals from landfills, ground water pollution and incinerator ashes. Upcoming challenges:- Better technology for recycling the PCBs. Increasing the recycling efficiency. Proper decomposition of E-waste. To provide environment, health and safety standards. World wide scenario:- USA discards 30 million computers each year. 100 million phones are disposed in Europe each year. E-waste produced by USA is about 3 million tons each year. China produces 2.3 million tons E-waste. Indian generates about 1,46,180 tons of E-waste every year. Cathode ray tube:- Cathode ray tube converts electrical signals in to visual images. They are present in television, camcorders, monitors and other electronic equipment's. A typical CRT contains 2-5 pounds of lead. These are major concern of E-waste management. |
