• A new study by Zion Market Research indicates that the gas turbine market should grow from $ 16 billion in 2015 to $ 20.5 billion in 2021, with an annual growth rate of 4 percent. The study indicated that the main driving forces on the market are improved turbine efficiency and durability, tighter carbon emissions regulations around the world and lower energy generation costs.
• A new report from the US Energy Information Administration predicts that coal could surpass natural gas as the main source of generation this winter. Although the percentage of coal generation has declined for several months, the new EIA forecast is for coal to grow slowly in December, January and February compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the proportion of natural gas generation could see year-on-year declines.
• A new study by Berkeley Lab suggests that wind turbines could continue to grow in size and further decrease the cost of wind power. The study said the larger turbines are on the horizon, and will allow lower costs. Land-based wind turbines have grown steadily from an average height of 18 meters in the 1980s to an average of 82 meters in 2015. The projects for the study of terrestrial wind turbines will reach an average height of 115 meters and an energy generation of 3.25 MW for 2030.
• Canada has joined other countries to announce a complete phase-out of coal energy emissions. Canada's Environment Minister Catherine McKenna announced the country's goal of eliminating coal by 2030 during a UN-sponsored conference on climate change in Morocco, the Wall Street Journal reported.
• Officials at the Texas Electric Reliability Council said that wind power recently exceeded 15,000 MW in one day, a record. The ERCOT system used 15,033 MW of wind power at 12:35 p.m. On Sunday, November 27, accounting for approximately 45 percent of total demand for electric power at that time. Of the total, more than 8,800 MW were produced from wind in the west and north of Texas, while about 3,800 MW came from the south.
• Alabama Power announced that the company received 200 proposals for renewable energy projects through an RFP that recently closed bidders. Most of the proposals involved solar energy, with some hydropower and biomass projects presented.
• Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead and Montana Governor Steve Bullock, along with colleagues and officials from 12 other states, issued a new report on December 2 describing growing opportunities for carbon dioxide capture . The report notes that market forces and federal and state policies are pushing the energy industry to reduce carbon emissions and that carbon capture with CO2-EOR compares cost-effectiveness with other emission reduction options.
• Dominion Virginia Power broke ground at Greensville County's natural gas-fired power plant. The $ 1.388 billion $ 1.3 billion plant is expected to be the largest North American gas combined cycle facility when it starts operating near the end of 2018. Greensville County Electric Power Station Steps from the 1,358-MW Brunswick County Power Station, which went online earlier this year. The two projects have a combined development cost of $ 2.5 billion.
