BRAIN MACHINE INTERFACE
BRAIN MACHINE.docx (Size: 14.93 KB / Downloads: 37) ABSTRACT: A piece of technology that would let you control an apparatus simply by thinking about it. It’s an brain-machine interface. A BMI could let paralyzed people control devices like wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs or computers. In traditional approach BMI, we create a decoder by monitoring the neural activity of the areas of brain responsible for control of natural arm HOW TO LINK A BRAIN T0 A MACHINE The component of brain machine interface work together to transform thought into action. It works under feedback mechanism which includes the steps: 1. A neural interface, surgically placed on motor cortex- the part of brain that controls movement –records the firing of neurons using dozen to as many as hundreds of tiny electrodes. Each electrode typically monitors a single neuron, detecting the number of firings in a certain time period. That data becomes the input of a computer program called a decoder. 2. The decoder is used, which is basically translates the brain activity into small number of output signals. These signals are used for controlling a prosthetic device. It almost function in same sense like that of a spinal cord. As spinal cord connects hundreds and thousands of neurons in the brain. Similarly the BMI system typically monitor the activity of few dozens to few hundred neurons and transforms their firings into small number of outputs like position, velocity and gripping force of prosthetic device. These overall stimulations link to the machine.. In addition to visual feedback, tactile and other sensors ill send information from the prosthesis back to the brain , giving the user not only control of the device but also the ability to feel it. |
