Snake Well Drill
Snake Well.ppt (Size: 1.63 MB / Downloads: 93) FOR WHAT ? The creative minds at Shell refused to accept that so much perfectly good oil was going to waste - so they decided to do something about it. The snake well drill is a ground breaking piece of technology that allows us to extract oil from these previously hard to reach places. Unlike conventional drills, state of the art software allows the snake well drill to follow complex horizontal paths, cutting through shale and sand to reach a number of different reservoir pockets from a single drilling platform. However despite the high complexity of the wells, the articles published in the industry publications refer only to existing technologies. Snake Well Snake Wells is a term used by Shell Oil to refer to a series of oil wells drilled in the Champion West oil field offshore Brunei. The wells used a combination of technologies including extended reach drilling, swellable wellbore packers and remotely operated zonal isolation and control. The directional drilling technique allows the path of the well to be directed to achieve contact with as many potentially producing features as possible. This results in a "snake like" well path which weaves up and down through multiple geological features in order to achieve maximum reservoir drainage. How Do They Do It? They use mobile drilling units that we move between well pads. This avoids dismantling and reassembling drilling equipment for each pad, making the process quicker and saving resources “Another benefit to Smart Wells, is that you don’t need to drill so many holes in the ground. You can drill fewer wells, but these wells will have a farther reach into more production zones. Actually, that’s where the concept of snake wells comes in.” DRILLING Shell’s snake wells, with their tortuous horizontal paths cutting through undulating layers of shale and sand to penetrate a number of producing zones, were perfect candidates for Smart Well control and data gathering. Additionally, snake wells incorporate advanced directional drilling techniques, such as steerable drill bits and software that generates detailed models of underground geology. This allows drillers to hit production targets that are less than 2 m across and miles below the surface. Bent pipe solution? Because the pipe that drives oil drills is surprisingly flexible, a horizontal well can snake around to reach isolated pockets or follow a reservoir that meanders across the terrain. Horizontal drilling has evolved over the past 25 years, and even though it remains more expensive than vertical drilling, greater productivity led to rapid acceptance. Between 3,000 and 4,000 wells are drilled annually with the technology. The record hole is a long-haul monster that wanders almost 7 miles, on the coast of southern England in the Wytch Farm oil field.
