Solar Power Satellite
Solar Power Satellite.pptx (Size: 1.23 MB / Downloads: 105) Introduction Solar Power Satellite or SPS, is a proposed satellite built in geostationary orbit that captures solar energy from sun and transmitted via a coherent microwave or laser beam to an Earth receiver where it is converted into electricity. Sunlight captured in space is many times more effective in providing continuous base load power compared to a solar array on the Earth Necessity: The demand for energy worldwide has increasing by 100% or almost doubled in every decade. The world’s main source of power is still generated by fossil fuels which is limited(75% of the total power globally). This causes large amount of pollution. And pollution free renewable sources also don’t have that much potential . Hence we need clean and reliable power source having potential for future. And SPS is the only solution know to human. SPS system with MPT: Photovoltaic cells (collector): PV cells converts the sun light into d.c. current. Magnetron (Transmitter/microwave generator): The microwave tube, such as a cooker-type magnetron, can generate and amplify high power microwave(over kW) with a high voltage (over kV) imposed. Especially, magnetron is very economical. Advantages: All time power availability Works regardless of cloud cover, daylight, or wind speed Has massive potential Pollution free No fuel required No hazardous waste product Much lighter, low maintenance structures Saves power transmission cost on ground level. Disadvantages: High initial cost Need long time for construction Maintenance of SPS is expensive and challenging Risk of interference with communication satellite Radiation hazards associated the system Risk involved with malfunction Can be used as a weapon. Conclusion: The increasing global energy demand is likely to continue for many decades. It has been predicted that by 2030, the world needs 30TW power from renewable energy sources and solar energy alone has the capability of producing around 600TW. Though its initial cost is very high, after some technical advancements it can be brought up to affordable level. Space solar power can completely solve our energy problems long term. The sooner we start and the harder we work, the shorter "long term" will be. |
