Doordarshan (often abbreviated DD) is an autonomous public service broadcaster founded by the Government of India which is owned by the Ministry of Broadcasting of India and is one of the two divisions of Prasar Bharati. It is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in India in terms of study and transmitter infrastructure, and was established on September 15, 1959. It also broadcasts on digital terrestrial transmitters. DD offers television, radio, online and mobile services throughout metropolitan and regional India, as well as overseas, through Indian Network and Radio India.
For the 2012 Summer Olympics live broadcasts of the opening and closing ceremonies of the games were broadcast on their national channel. DD Sports provides 24-hour coverage of sporting events. Doordarshan had a modest start as an experimental transmission that began in Delhi on September 15, 1959, with a small transmitter and an improvised studio. The regular daily broadcast began in 1965 as part of All India Radio. Doordarshan started a five-minute newsletter in the same year. Pratima Puri was the first news reader. Salma Sultan joined Doordarshan in 1967 and later became a news anchor. The television service was extended to Bombay (now Mumbai) and Amritsar in 1972.
Until 1975 only seven Indian cities had a television service and Doordarshan remained the only television provider in India. The television services were separated from the radio on April 1, 1976. Each office of All India Radio and Doordarshan was placed under the direction of two separate Directors General in New Delhi. Finally, in 1982, Doordarshan took shape as a National Announcer. Krishi Darshan was the first program broadcast in Doordarshan. It began on January 26, 1967 and is one of the oldest programs on Indian television.
