SPIN is a family of protocols used to efficiently disseminate information in a wireless sensor network. Conventional approaches to data dissemination, such as flooding and gossip, lose valuable communication and energy resources, sending redundant information across the network. In addition, these protocols are not sensitive to resources or adapted to resources. SPIN solves these shortcomings of conventional approaches using data negotiation and resource matching algorithms. Nodes running SPIN assign a high-level name to their data, called metadata, and conduct metadata negotiations before data is transmitted. This ensures that these are not redundant data sent over the network. In addition, SPIN has access to the current power level of the node and adapts the protocol it is running based on the amount of power remaining. The simulation results show that SPIN is more energy efficient than flooding or gossip while distributing data at the same rate or faster than any of these protocols.
Significant advances in hardware fabrication technology and the development of efficient software algorithms make a technically and economically viable network a composite of many small, low-cost sensors using wireless communications, ie a network of wireless sensors. Sensor networks are rapidly growing area of research in wireless communications and distributed networks. Data transmission is one of the major challenges in the wireless sensor network (WSN). Different routing protocols have been proposed to save energy during the transmission of data in WSN. Because nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are typically very small in size and powered by an irreplaceable battery, efficient use of energy becomes one of the most difficult tasks when designing any protocol for WSN. Routing protocols based on the data-centric approach are adequate in this context which performs aggregation of data in the network to produce energy-saving data dissemination.
