Bump was an iOS and Android application that allowed smartphone users to transfer contact, photo, and file information between devices. In 2011, it was # 8 on Apple's list of all time most popular free iPhone apps, and by February 2013 had downloaded 125 million times. Its developer, Bump Technologies, closed the service and suspended the application on January 31, 2014, after being acquired by Google for Google Photos and Android Camera.
Bump is a free software program (app) that allows two phones to transfer contact information when phone owners "hit" their hands. To work, each phone owner must have the application and each phone must be motion-sensitive (having an accelerometer).
To hit, phone owners must open the application, approve the information they select to share and tilt their phones at the same time. Usually, phone owners perform the inclination to "hit" the phones gently together. As the application is already open, the movement of the phone sends a signal to the Bump server. The server uses complex algorithms to match the first signal with another impact signal sent exactly at the same time from the same location. If the server finds a match, it sends a preview of the data to be shared to each of the phones. Both people must accept the data before the data is downloaded to the phone.
