A strap foot is a component of the foundation of a building. It is a type of combined foot, consisting of two or more column bases connected by a concrete beam. This type of beam is called a belt bundle. It is used to help distribute the weight of the bases of the columns loaded excessively heavy or eccentric to the adjacent shoes.
A strap foot is often used along with the columns that are located along the property of a building or lot line. Typically, columns are centered on column bases, but under conditions where columns are located directly adjacent to the property line, the column bases may be offset so that they do not invade the adjacent property. This results in an eccentric loading on a part of the base, causing it to be inclined to one side. The belt beam restricts the tendency of the base to overturn by connecting it to the nearby bases.
