The research project aims to design and develop a Collapsible Axial Flow Pump (CAFP) and its protective cage for infants and children suffering from end-stage heart failure. The primary focus of the flow design of the CAFP is a streamlined blood flow path with no secondary flow regions so that irregular flow patterns are minimized. Extensive computational modeling has been performed to generate critical pump performance curves and to estimate blood stress levels. The results obtained for the present CAFP will serve as the foundation for future design phases and this work will provide a new therapeutic option for thousands of pediatric cardiac failure patients
