Water Jet Machining Water Jet Machining.pptx (Size: 70.27 KB / Downloads: 18) Introduction Water jet machining process is an extension of abrasive jet machining process. High pressure and high velocity stream of water is used to cut the relatively soft and non metallic materials like paper boards, wood, plastics, rubber, fibre glass, leather, etc. Principle The high velocity of water jet comes out of the nozzle and strikes the materials, its kinetic energy is converted to pressure energy including high stresses in the work material. When this induced stress exceeds the ultimate shear stress of the material, small chips get loosened. Construction & Working It consists of pumping unit, accumulator, control valve, regulating chamber, nozzle. The pumping unit( oil pump) is driven by electric motor, the oil drawn from reservoir is pumped to the intensifier which uses low pressure oil to high pressure water. The intensifier act as a high pressure pump, produces water pressure as high as 40 times that of the oil.(1500 to 4000 N/mm2). To minimize pulsation in water flow, a high pressure accumulator(pressure vessel to store high pressure water to give smooth outflow) is used. High pressure water is transported to nozzle through rigid high pressure tubing and rigid connectors. Proper design of nozzles has made it possible to discontinue the use of long chain polymers to lower down friction in fluid flow. Advantages In WJM, water is used as energy transfer medium. It is cheap, non toxic and easy to dispose. Low operating cost Low maintenance cost The work area remains clean and dust free Very less amount of heat is generated during cutting operation Easily automated. Disadvantages Initial cost is high It is difficult to machine hard material Noise operation Applications It is used to cut intricate contours It is used to cut fibre glass and polyethylene automotive parts. It is used to cut non metals and soft materials. It is also used for high speed cutting of corrugated box |
